Galien Township Fire Department Millage Renewal Vote

August 7, 2018

(Polls open 7:00am to 8:00pm at Fire Station, 305 Kiley Drive)

I wanted to remind everyone that the Township Fire Department has a millage renewal vote is on this coming Tuesday, August 7.

The millage renewal vote (ballot question) is whether to renew the 1.0 mill Fire Department millage that has been in existence since the 1970’s.  For most residents in our community, 1.0 mill of tax is approximately $50 - $100 per year (included on the Winter tax bill).  It generates about $48,000 annually in total taxes to run the Fire Department.  The actual ballot language is shown below.

According to our Fire Chief, Ted Chase, the millage “keeps the doors open” as it pays for the operating costs of the Fire Department, such as costs to operate the fire equipment and station (i.e. repairs, fuel, utilities, etc) and wages paid to firemen (they are only paid when they respond to a call – the rest of their time is volunteer time, i.e. training, maintenance of equipment and trucks, meetings, etc).

A more in depth slide show that was put together by Chief Chase can be found here.

You should also be aware that you have a dedicated group of 13 Firemen that have a combined 225+ years of service to the community.  They have stepped up to the plate for our community and they are the ones that we rely on when we are in our time of need.

In Summary, while I can’t take a position on how you should vote on this important millage renewal, I can tell you that a “YES” vote keeps our Fire Department funded and continuing to operate as it has in the past.  A “NO” vote will stop the funding for the Fire Department and significantly reduce, if not eliminate the services it will be able to provide for the community.

Again, please take time on Tuesday to vote and participate in our democratic process!

Thank you,

Jerry Mast

August 7, 2018 Ballot Proposal: FIRE DEPARTMENT MILLAGE RENEWAL

(Polls open 7:00am to 8:00pm at Fire Station, 305 Kiley Drive)

Township of Galien:

In support of the Galien Township Fire Department’s continued operation and acquisition of fire-fighting vehicles and related equipment, shall the limitation on the total amount of taxes which may be assessed against the taxable valuation of all real and personal property in the Township of Galien liable for taxation, including that land lying in the Village of Galien, be set at one mill ($1.00 per each $1,000 of taxable valuation, as equalized).  The above said millage rate represents renewal of the permanently reduced millage of nine thousand seven hundred fifty-seven ten thousandths of one mill ($.9757 cents per $1,000.00 taxable valuation, as equalized) and new millage of two hundred forty-three ten thousandths of one mill ($.0243 cents per $1,000.00 of taxable valuation, as equalized).  The authorization to levy said millage is for a period of five (5) years, being the years of 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.  It is estimated that the amount of revenue to be generated from the total millage in the first year of levy (2018) will be approximately $48,836.00, of which approximately $1,186 is generated from the new (additional) millage.
